Malachi is pointing out that the second area of great offense to the institution of marriage occurs when we are before God in prayer. He immediately begins to recognize the emotion that accompanies this institution—and we must be aware of and cautioned regarding emotions that saturate marriage.

When marriages fail or are failing, there is normally tremendous sorrow and heartache. We may be sorry when we fail or come up short in many other areas of life, but when we have major troubles or fail in marriage or by extension, child raising, which is an integral part of the marriage institution, emotions rage in marriage, unlike no other institution.
